Fluctuations of symptoms

Something important to keep in mind is that the symptoms (back pain or SD) will fluctuate over time. In other words, one day I would wake up with minimal pain or my voice would sound wonderful, and then the next day one or both would be worse! So don't be deterred by 'bad days'.

Use the symptom as a 'cue' to focus on the emotional and don't get caught up in the fluctuations. Know that over time, they will subside. Also know that this process is something that is a part of you and you will always be vulnerable to feeling these symptoms. I look at them as a 'gift' because they are signals to me to pay attention to my emotions.

Hello Lynn,
Connie Pike, a speech pathologist who offers a "Free To Speak" voice recovery clinic in Florida, emailed the link to your blog. I've just finished reading your new and older posts and wanted to thank you for sharing your story. A coupIe of years ago, I read "The MindBody Prescription" and "Healing Back Pain." I had zero problems accepting Dr. Sarno's theories. However, the one thing I never did was to get and watch his video. This was partly because I was hoping to actually go to NYC and see Dr. Sarno personally. I was extremely disappointed when Dr. Sarno responded that he didn't see patients from outside the NYC area. I am a professional singer/entertainer/environmental educator whose career has been sidelined for the past five years by SD. Reading your blog has re-inspired me to get Dr. Sarno's video and re-read his books and deal with this insidious SD once and for all! Let the healing begin! May God bless and keep you! Hi John,

I’m glad to hear that you are ‘re-inspired’. I too had zero problems accepting Dr. Sarno’s theories, but it seems that is not enough. The big difference for me was to watch his video (and I have, over and over) and really sticking to a daily plan of reading, reflecting, and journaling. Apparently the old way of thinking about our symptoms is so deeply engrained, it takes time and effort to ‘re-educate’ ourselves.

Please let me know how it goes for you!

Take care,
Lynn

Lynn,
Would you mind posting the name of the DVD and the books that you felt are most helpful? I can't seem to find the DVD on amazon and I'm wondering if I'm looking for the wrong thing?
Thanks,
Sara

Hi Lynn,
I was wondering if you have any updates from since your last blog post in 2008, if you could share whether you have still successfully overcome your SD. I have suffered from a voice disorder in the past year and am going through testing to rule out whether or not I have SD. My disorder began during a time of extreme stress at my job, and I always felt there was a mind-body connection.
Thank you,
Cheryl
